Do The French Call it French Toast or Just Toast?
In France, French Toast is not just known as toast but as “Pain Perdu” which translates to “lost bread”. This reference is to the stale bread used to make this dish, the only way to salvage it is to soak it in an egg and milk mixture. Another interesting fact, French toast was not invented by the French, in fact it existed years before France was even considered a country. Apparently, people have been dipping their bread in a creamy egg mixture for years before french toast was even a thing. I’m just happy it’s here for us to enjoy, second best thing to sliced bread (and chocolate).
How To Make Easy French Toast
French toast much like bread pudding is incredibly easy to make and all you need is some basic everyday ingredients and some stale bread. Day old or stale bread works best for this recipe because it can soak up all the eggy mixture without collapsing and turning into a soggy mess. Brioche and Challah are considered the best breads to use because they are both egg based breads with a dense and fluffy crumb. Truth is, if you don’t have stale bread a good slice (1 inch or greater) will make for a great French toast – whole wheat, raisin bread, cinnamon bread, white bread etc.
Here are the ingredients you will need to make your french toast:
Eggs – You can’t have french toast without eggs. The eggs help the mixture solidify and provides extra creaminess.
Milk or Cream – Any milk alternative can be used but milk or cream add that extra richness and fat content.
Sugar, Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Vanilla – For a sweet, aromatic and flavourful french toast these 4 ingredients are essential.
Salt – Just a pinch goes a long way to balance out the flavours
Butter – Unsalted of course, to fry your french toast.
Challah or Brioche Bread – These two bread are both egg based and provide the best structure, if possible, day old bread works best.
There are many variations of french toast and some are even made as a savoury dish. I remember once someone telling me they grew up eating french toast dipped in ketchup and it literally blew my mind. I never considered a savoury version, EVER. In my early 20’s I tried making an almond butter chocolate chip French toast sandwich, it could have been better but I wasn’t very seasoned in the kitchen and didn’t know what I was doing. I shall try it again someday and promise to share the perfected recipe here with all of you. The point is, everyone has their way of making french toast but this recipe is a sweet cinnamon one.
How To Store French Toast
If you have leftovers consider yourself lucky, french toast tastes just as good if not better the next day. You can store your extras in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. French toast can also be frozen in a freezer safe bag or container for up to 3 months.
