What is Tuna Salad
Tuna salad is a combination of canned tuna (packed in oil or water) and mayonnaise that has been jazzed up with some vegetables. It can be served with sliced bread, toast, crackers, stuffed in an avocado or on a bed of lettuce like a true salad. Traditionally, some of the ingredients used to make this classic lunch item include but are not limited to celery, relish, pickles, mustard, and onion.
In my early 20’s I would always enjoy watching cooking shows, it was my way of relaxing when I wasn’t working or studying. Unlike my friends who were watching the latest trending show I was busy watching the Food Network, it gave me great pleasure to watch great chefs create great meals. This is where I got my inspiration of adding apples to my tuna salad, not too sure who mentioned it (I think it was Martha Stewart) but I was like “ok, sure let’s do it” and I have never looked back since.
How To Make The Best Tuna Salad
As mentioned above, every good tuna salad starts with canned tuna, mayonnaise and some additional ingredients. For this recipe I added some of my favourite veggies, herbs and the star ingredient apple.
My veggies of choice for this salad were green and red bell peppers. They add so much texture, colour and flavour to any salad. I also added cilantro and chives, their intense and bright flavours can make any dish taste so fresh and light. And of course the star ingredient, apple, it adds so much crunch, colour, and sweetness to this salad taking it from a regular tuna salad to a THE BEST TUNA SALAD!
If bell peppers, chives or cilantro are not your cup of tea, feel free to add your choice of herbs and veggies but don’t skip out on the apples they are truly what makes this salad taste so good.
