Amazing Apple Crisp

Apple crisp is the easy version of apple pie. There is no need to make a crust or let it chill, it has little to no resting time and you can eat it within minutes after baking. If you are looking for a quick and easy dessert this recipe is the one for you . The ingredients are simple and you may already have them laying around at home.

What Apples Are Best For Baking?

It can be quite overwhelming standing in the middle of the apple aisle at the grocery or the middle of an apple orchard at your local farm – the selection can be extremely large and never ending. With respect to baking it’s important to follow what the experts say and use crisp, firm and sweet-tart apples that withstand the heat of the oven.

Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples are the classics and the ultimate baking apples. Use these apples for pies, crisps or any other baked dessert. I almost always have Royal Gala apples at home so I use them often when making my apple crisps. If I can lend one recommendation it’s to balance out the sweetness and almost always use a few tart apples.

Two Step Apple Crisp

Do you want your house to smell like a crisp fall afternoon? Make some apple crisp! Apple Crisp is made up of two parts:

  1. Apples tossed in cinnamon, brown sugar, lemon juice, nutmeg and flour.
  2. Crispy oat streusel topping.

Apple Layer

Apples – Peel, core and cut your apples into small cubes or thin slices, this allows them to bake evenly. I used Granny Smith apples (for tartness) and Royal Gala (for sweetness).

Lemon – I used half a lemon. It’s recommended to toss your apples in lemon juice to stop surface oxidation eliminating the chance of your apples turning brown.

Cinnamon + Nutmeg – These two compliment each other so well in baked apple desserts I use them every chance I get.

Flour – Adding flour to your apples will help thicken the juices, reducing any chance of having a watery mess.

Brown Sugar –  Definitely holds more flavour and moisture. Make sure to pack your brown sugar and press out all the tiny air pockets stuck in between the large sugar crystals. This allows you to maximize the amount of sugar used.

Butter – Unsalted and room temperature butter.  If you have to use salted butter just reduce the amount of salt you add by 1/8 of a teaspoon or eliminate it all together.

Salt – The main purpose of salt it to bring all the flavours together, enhance them and balance the sweetness. Remember to reduce the amount of salt if you are using salted butter

Vanilla – honestly, real extract or artificial, they both work very well in this recipe.

Crispy Oat Streusel

My favourite part of Apple Crisp is by far the crispy oat streusel topping. This streusel is the best addition to any kind of baked fruit dessert and can easily be made by combining rolled oats, flour, baking powder, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and butter.
