What Are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are essentially a no cook method of making oatmeal by soaking them overnight in yogurt and milk. Oatmeal is prepared by cooking raw oats on the stovetop or by adding boiling water to packaged instant oatmeal. Through my research I’ve come to know that this recipe originated in Switzerland and coincidentally my earliest memories of overnight oats comes from my childhood years when I lived in Switzerland. I remember my mom making overnight oats all the time and as a child I thoroughly enjoyed eating them. They have such a distinct flavour and can be easily altered to make any flavour you wish as long as you have the base – rolled oats.

The overnight oats I grew up with were made with muesli, yogurt and oats but since I don’t have muesli stocked up all the time I used granola. I substitute the muesli with granola, dried and raw fruit. This breakfast recipe is packed with a rich source of fibre and protein and after soaking all night long you have a ready-to-go breakfast option.

How To Make The Best Overnight Oats

If you have never had overnight oats you will be floored by how delicious and easy this recipe is. Here is a list of what you will need.

Rolled Oat – Overnight oats cannot exist without rolled oats. The process of being dehusked, steamed and rolled allows for them to be eaten without any further cooking.

Yogurt – A good quality yogurt such as greek is ideal for overnight oats it’s packed with protein and the right amount of creaminess. I like to use Cherry yogurt because I find it has the most intense flavour but if you want a more versatile flavour I would recommend either vanilla or just plain.

Dried fruit – You can pretty much add any dried fruit you like. I used raisins for this recipe because that’s what the child in me remembers from eating overnight oats in Switzerland. I have used cranberries before and sometimes I have used no dried fruit at all.

Liquid – Any liquid can be used to help soften the rolled oats. I like to use water but milk or any other milk alternative can be used as well.

Chia Seeds – I love chia seeds, they are packed with nutrients and provide so many health benefits, how could you not add them? If you do not have them you can skip this ingredient, it’s only optional.

Sweetener – This is completely optional since the dried fruit and yogurt contain a lot of sugars and make the overnight oats sweet enough. I added honey for this recipe but other alternatives are maple syrup, agave syrup, date paste, etc.

Toppings– Let your creativity take over. You can add fresh fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg, chocolate chips, frozen fruit, coconut, nut butters etc. You can create endless amounts of combinations! Please let me know in the comments what creation you came up with, I would love to hear them and try them out myself.
