This dinner recipe came from the kids asking me for pasta with meat sauce and all I had in the refrigerator was two pieces of top sirloin that was originally intended for a BBQ meal. You can convince me very easily when it comes to pasta so when the kids asked me for pasta I was more than happy to switch up our planned dinner meal. This is where I had to become creative – how am I going to incorporate this meat and the sauce? Braising it!
What Is Braised Beef?
What exactly is braised beef? It sounds fancier than it really is so do not let the name intimidate you. Braising beef is essentially pot roasting, that’s it, not much to it. Braising is a cooking method that allows you to cook a tough piece of meat in a liquid for a long and slow period of time until it becomes juicy and tender.
How To Make Easy Braised Beef Tomato Sauce
Braising beef requires little effort and is extremely easy to make, all you need is some vegetables, beef, a pot and some form of liquid – in this case tomato sauce.
If you are looking at making braised beef as your main course, you can follow the same cooking instruction and use the same ingredients – minus the tomato sauce.
Meat – I used 2 pieces of top sirloin that I purchased at my local Costco (you can also use beef short ribs) and this was enough for my family of four. Once you’ve decided on your choice of meat season it with salt and pepper and dredge it with flour. In cooking, dredging means coating your item, in this case your meat, in flour. This will help it create a golden crust and absorb all the flavours during cooking.
Vegetables – In this recipe I used sweet peppers, carrots, garlic and onions.
Tomato Paste – Adds flavour and thickens the sauce.
Red Wine – This is completely optional. I used wine for another layer of flavour and to deglaze the pot once the vegetables have been sautéed.
Liquid Base- I used my homemade tomato sauce (strained tomatoes, olive oil, garlic, and onion) and a cup of pasta water. You can use your favourite tomato sauce for this recipe or a can of crushed tomatoes.
Oil – For browning the steaks.
Spices – My favourite combination, oregano, salt and pepper

Storing Your Tomato Sauce
When it comes to meat recipes I like to enjoy them within a couple of days. The truth is the tomato sauce will taste better the next day as all the flavours have had time to marinate. If you are storing your sauce, store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing your sauce, the tiny ice crystals formed in the freezer make the sauce watery once thawed making it taste watered down. But then again, this is only MY opinion and recommendation.
