The Best Turkey Chili

Turkey Chili pinit

Brrr it’s cold outside! Let’s warm up our soul with a bowl of the best turkey chili. Topped with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and sliced jalapeño, this chili is loaded with flavour and may be possibly the easiest chili you have ever made.

I live in Canada, the great white north, and the winters here are frigid and sometimes unbearable. It’s often you’ll hear me say “this cold seriously gets down to your bones” followed by a suggestion of a hot bowl of ‘something’. When the cold gets down to my bones you’ll find me in the kitchen making a soup or my all time favourite Turkey Chili.

In my early 20’s, I was always searching for the next healthy recipe to supplement my healthy lifestyle. I was obsessed with being fit and eating clean and everything I made had to be low calorie and unfortunately bland. This is where this recipe came about, it was low calorie, healthy and to my surprise super tasty. Fast forward to now and this recipe has evolved, it is more flavourful and still remains healthy in my books. And yes I know it’s not your traditional chili recipe but trust the process and I promise it will be the easiest and most delicious chili recipe you have ever made.

What is Chili?

Chili has many variations but in the traditional sense it is a stew made with beans, meat and chili peppers. Some do not add beans and some make chili with meat – Chili con carne. Because there are so many ways of making chili these days I truly believe there is no wrong or right way and that is why this recipe is so great and falls perfectly in the category of chili.

How To Make The Best Turkey Chili

Most chili recipes use tomatoes, kidney beans, onions, and diced bell peppers as the base and this recipe is made using this exact method. For this dish in place of tomatoes, onions and bell peppers I opted for a jar of salsa, it has all the main ingredients for the base so why not save the knife skills and incorporate it – that’s exactly what I did. Along with the salsa, I used ground turkey as it is a leaner and healthier meat option, black bean because they are more flavourful and a handful of spices.

Salsa – it has everything you need without the knife work. I used the Tostito brand, mild salsa.

Black Beans – I used one 540 ml can of black beans I got from the local grocery store. Drained and rinsed. Black beans are loaded with fibre, protein, and carbohydrates which makes it a powerful nutritious ingredient.

Ground Turkey – turkey is a leaner and healthier meat option and because it’s in a stew it will not be as dry.

Tomato Paste – this is great to thicken up the stew and add a more intense tomato flavour.

Spices – for this recipe you’ll need oregano, garlic powder, cumin, salt, ground black pepper, paprika, and a dash of ground cinnamon.

In a large pot, brown the turkey meat add tomato paste, spices, salsa and black beans. That’s it! Simmer for 30-40 minutes and you’ll be eating The Best Turkey Chili Recipe in no time!
